Chemicals needed to open a pool: the spring checklist

Opening a pool takes six chemical categories: alkalinity increaser, pH adjuster, calcium hardness increaser, stabilizer (cyanuric acid), sanitizer, and shock, added in that order with a test and a wait between each one.   4. Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) to 30 to 50 ppm for outdoor pools, so chlorine survives sunlight instead of burning off within hours.
  5. Sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) brought up to a working residual, at least 1 ppm free chlorine per CDC guidance, or 2 ppm if the pool uses cyanuric acid.
  6. Shock last, once everything else is dialed in, to clear out anything that grew during the off-season and to burn off combined chlorine from winter buildup.

Wait 15 to 30 minutes between each step with the pump running, and retest before moving to the next chemical. Skipping the wait means you’re dosing off a reading the water hasn’t caught up to yet.

Why does alkalinity have to go first?

Total alkalinity is the water’s resistance to pH change. When should you not shock right away?
