Best pool stain remover: identify the stain, then treat it

There is no single “best” pool stain remover because stains fall into three chemically different categories: metal, organic, and mineral scale. Treat a metal stain with chlorine and you’ll watch it darken instead of fade. The fix starts with a two-minute test, not a product purchase.

Guessing wrong wastes money and can make things worse. A vitamin C tablet held against the stain for 30 seconds tells you which category you’re dealing with before you spend on the wrong chemical.

How do you tell a metal stain from an organic stain?

Press a crushed ascorbic acid (vitamin C) tablet, or a handful of tablets wrapped in a thin cloth, directly against the stain and hold it there for about 30 seconds. If the stain visibly lightens or disappears, it’s a metal stain, usually iron (rust-brown), copper (blue-green or black), or manganese (purple-black). If the vitamin C does nothing, the stain is organic (leaves, algae remnants, or dead insects) and will respond to chlorine and brushing instead.

How do you actually treat a metal stain without draining the pool?

Pre-dissolve ascorbic acid powder or crushed tablets in a bucket of pool water, then walk the perimeter pouring the solution close to the stained surfaces with the pump running. For a full-pool treatment, use roughly 0.5 to 1 pound of ascorbic acid per 10,000 gallons for light to moderate staining, and up to 2 pounds per 10,000 gallons for heavy, longstanding rust or copper staining.

Most stains start fading within 15 to 30 minutes and are gone within 2 to 4 hours. The catch: the ascorbic acid doesn’t remove the metal from the pool, it just pulls it back into solution. Add a metal sequestrant immediately after the treatment or the same iron or copper will oxidize and restain the surface within days, especially if chlorine is added before the sequestrant is in.

How do you treat organic stains?

Organic stains respond to oxidation. Shock the pool to 5 to 10 ppm free chlorine, brush the stained area daily, and let the filter run continuously for 24 to 48 hours. Most organic staining clears within two to three days of this combination; stubborn spots sometimes need a second shock cycle.

Never mix the vitamin C test and a chlorine shock on the same patch at the same time. Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent and chlorine is an oxidizer; running both on the same spot at once just cancels each other’s chemistry and muddies your diagnosis.

What about scale, and when do you need an acid wash?

Calcium scale forms when calcium hardness runs high and pH spikes, usually from a period of poor maintenance rather than one bad week. Light scale can sometimes be spot-treated with a diluted muriatic acid solution and a pumice stone or scale brush made for pool plaster; heavy, pool-wide scale usually needs a professional acid wash, which means draining the pool and washing the surface with a stronger acid solution.
